Over the past 20 years, Pattigift Therapy has consistently addressed the difficult questions that Black communities have to deal with around their mental health. Replacing stigma with the understanding that self care is a revolutionary act for individuals and communities.
We have created spaces to not only understand the trauma of psychological oppression but to enable healing from it. We have done this with individuals, group, charities, universities and other institutions. With the support of the Association of Black Psychologists (USA) both theoretically and practically, we have been able to grapple with the thorny question of the impact of race on mental health and wellbeing.
Our team of experienced therapists and trainers are dedicated to creating a safe and welcoming space for our clients and students. We believe in the power of cultural competency and strive to provide inclusive and culturally responsive services.
Founded by Rameri Moukam and NusShen Aungkhu formally known as Davy Hay in 2003, Pattigift was established due to the continued over-representation of people of African heritage in psychiatric services and the lack of culturally congruent approaches to addressing their mental health issues. We have seen a steady increase in the use of our services year on year with a much welcomed rise of self-referrals.
The founders of Pattigift have over 50 years of mental health experience in the NHS. As well as having played a prominent role at the beginning of the Black mental health movement in the 1980s. In 2016, the Association of Black Psychologists (USA) honoured them with the President’s Award for promoting and advancing Black mental health and healing internationally. And over the past twenty years has created and designed culturally grounded approaches from a Black psychological perspective. A recurring theme of their work is that African heritage people should invest much more in their self-care. Self-care is a political and revolutionary act for African heritage peoples. We have been conditioned over the generations to put our needs second to others, with terrible consequences.
