Healing circles are "counter spaces" defined as sites where deficient notions of black people can be challenged and where positive climate can be established and maintained (Solorzano et al 2000 p.70).
Our healing circles are a way to bring those from African and Caribbean backgrounds to meet and discuss the impact of discrimination and racism on mental and physical health.
The circles follow an African-centred therapeutic intervention model to support individuals in building resilience, addressing trauma, building collective cohesion, and developing family and community support. Additionally, the healing circles provide culturally specific strategies and resources to help those with Black heritage to discuss and heal from historical and current traumas, both individually and collectively.
Community members have found the groups to be highly beneficial, when it comes to social integration and cohesion with a regular Healing Circles attendee commenting: “It’s fantastic to examine the issues around being seen as strong black women and how that impacts us”.
